On this day in 1609, Italian painter Annibale Carracci died in Rome at age 48. Widely recognized as one of the fathers of Italian Baroque art, after starting an academy in his native Bologna with his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico, Annibale moved to Rome where he worked for cardinals and popes and ushered in a new, naturalistic and anti-mannerist style grounded in the study of classical precedent and High Renaissance artists like Raphael, Correggio, and Titian.
