6 October is the feast day of St. Bruno, founder of the Carthusian Order. Though more popular in northern Europe, images of Bruno became more common in Italy after his full canonization by Pope Gregory XV in 1623, though often by foreign artists living abroad. A number of Carthusian monasteries, or charter houses, were established in Italy, including Bologna, Florence, Naples, and Pavia.
