In her compelling text, Shirley Neilsen Blum reveals that this new art did not arise from a secularizing vision of the world, as is often supposed. Rather, it grew out of the effort to depict traditional religious subjects with a greater immediacy and emotional power. The new art belonged to common Christian culture, at a time of increased popular devotion.
