 678935\n\n\n\nPaper Abstract:&nbsp\;It is emblematic of the sometimes-im
penetrable history of Naples that one of the city’s leading painters o
f the seventeenth century remains nameless: this is the Master of the An
nunciation to the Shepherds\, so-called for his portrayals of ragged\, d
ignified shepherds painted with a thick impasto\, murky earth tones\, an
d strong contrasts of light and dark. Despite no consensus on his name\,
through his paintings we have a remarkably tactile and specific represe
ntation of the world he inhabited and the objects he owned: We can ident
ify specific books and plaster casts he owned he owned\, recognize music
 al instruments\, carpets\, mirrors\, costumes\, copper pots and pans\, m
aiolica pitchers\, pewter vessels\, and other wares\, as well as apprent
ices and a range of models. Given that nothing else is known about the a
rtist\, these mundane objects can hold an important key to understanding
both his art and place in the world of Neapolitan painting more broadly
