SUMMARY:Early Modern Rome 3 (1341-1667)
DESCRIPTION:Early modern Rome was contradictory and complex\; its vernac
ular and high culture animated and rich. From Petrarch’s crowning as P
oet Laureate on the Capitoline in 1341 to the pontificate of Alexander V
II Chigi in 1667\, this conference aims to bring together scholars from
a range of disciplines to investigate the city proper as well as the cam
pagna romana through a variety of different approaches and methods.\n\n\
n\nThe resounding response to both previous Early Modern Rome conference
s in May 2010 and October 2013—76 papers from 9 different countries an
 d 119 papers from 12 countries\, respectively—mirrored the complex mix
of the city itself and the changing face of early modern studies. We en
courage papers from a range of disciplines—history\, art and architect
 ural history\, literature\, music\, dance\, religious studies\, philosop
 hy\, history of medicine or science\, diplomacy\, gender\, or others—t
o bring together in a single venue those whose research focuses on the c
ity of Rome and the Roman countryside.\n\n\n\nAs with EMR2\, the first t
wo days of the conference will take place in the city at the cultural in
stitutions in and around piazza dell’Orologio\, and the last day of th
e conference will instead be held at the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle in Bra
cciano.&nbsp\;Given that the organizers wish to foster dialogue with oth
er researchers\, we encourage the submission of single papers rather tha
n complete sessions. Complete sessions will be accepted\, although we re
serve the right to reconfigure them on the basis of other proposals.\n\n
\n\nOrganizers: Paolo Alei and Julia L. Hairston\n\n\n\nConference spons
ored by the University of California\, Rome with ACCENT and with the col
laboration of the Istituto storico italiano per il Medioevo\, the Archiv
io storico Capitolino\, the Biblioteca Vallicelliana\, and the Orsini-Od
 escalchi Castle.
