SUMMARY:Field Seminar: Gateways to Medieval Naples
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, the art and architecture of medieval Naple
s has been the subject of renewed scholarly activity that is generating
important research on understudied monuments and exploring fresh approac
hes to the history of the city’s material culture. A next generation o
f scholars is reassessing Neapolitan studies and advancing research with
greater interdisciplinary breadth and expanded geographic scope. Given
the vitality of ongoing scholarship\, it is an ideal moment to address t
he city’s monuments as gateways to understanding medieval Naples as a
monumental whole\, comprising diverse artistic and cultural practices\,
shifting topographies\, and complex urban networks.\n\n\n\nTo this end\,
the Bibliotheca Hertziana - Max-Planck-Institut für Kunstgeschichte (R
ome)\, the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II - Dipartimento
di Studi Umanistici (Naples)\, and the Centro per la Storia dell'Arte e
dell'Architettura delle Città Portuali (Naples) are co-organizing a fie
ld seminar called Gateways to Medieval Naples\, to be held in Naples Jun
e 8-10\, 2020. Grounded in collaborative on-site study of works of art a
nd animated by collegial exchange of ideas\, the seminar will convene a
small group of scholars to share and further develop the latest research
on Naples and to chart new methodological approaches to this complex ne
xus of the medieval world.\n\n\n\nEach morning\, participants will prese
nt their research on site at a series of monuments and collections in th
 e city. Each afternoon\, the Centro per la Storia dell'Arte e dell'Archi
tettura delle Città Portuali will host roundtable discussions with pres
entations that address new avenues for research\, questions of methodolo
gical practice\, and topics of a broader nature not related to a single
 site.
