DESCRIPTION:Seminar by Judith Steinhoff\, University of Houston\n\n\n\nT
 wo fourteenth-century Italian representations of the Lamentation over Ch
 rist\, a large panel by Giottino and a component of a large altarpiece m
 ade by Ambrogio Lorenzetti\, serve as case studies to argue for a more w
 idespread gendering of grief in Trecento Tuscany. Examining the painting
 s in relation to several other cultural instruments\, including the devo
 tional text\, Meditations on the Life of Christ\, and the Sienese statut
 es governing funerals\, the paper will argue that\, although created pri
 marily for purposes of prayer and spiritual edification\, images of grie
 ving over Christ also participated in an intertextual process that encod
 ed and promoted acceptable grieving behaviors in the face of personal lo
