Painter and printmaker Emilio Vedova was born on this day in 1919 in Venice. A self-taught artist, Vedova’s earliest works were inspired by his hometown churches. Despite his interest in traditional architecture and Old Master painting, Vedova developed an abstract style that he often used to protest war and violence, having been inspired by Pablo Picasso’s Guernica (1937). Vedova died on October 25, 2006.
