Architect Nicola Salvi was born 6 August 1697. Best known for his work on the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Salvi, a native Roman, studied philosophy, math, medicine, and anatomy and also wrote poetry. Deeply interested in classical architecture, Salvi is reputed to have memorized Vitrivius’ treatise on architecture. Salvi’s design won the competition sponsored by Pope Clement XII for the Trevi Fountain in 1732, the largest in Rome.
