On this day in 1477, Francesco della Robbia was born in Florence. Son of the sculptor Andrea, Francesco entered the Dominican convent of San Marco, taking the name Fra Ambrogio, in 1495. He stayed connected to the family’s glazed terracotta business and created a number of altarpieces, including the Nativity at La Verna.

Dear Italian Art Society,
I was wondering if there is a book on the entire della robbia family and all their children. I am looking in particular for a daughter named Francesca (I am not sure this is her name), an only child, who lived in Empoli, outside of Florence. I’ll look forward to your response.
Thank you.
