About sixty skeletons have been uncovered during renovations to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Archaeologists have dated the remains to the fifth or sixth century CE based on coins found at the site and surmise that death was brought on by the so-called Plague of Justinian that was widespread in Byzantium and Western Europe in the sixth century. The haphazard arrangement of the bodies, which lack signs of trauma, suggests that they were buried quickly, another clue that plague was their killer.
