The Cathedral of Siena re-opened its “Gate of Heaven” on 1 March 2014. Through 6 January 2015 visitors can admire the very peak of the building from a vantage point typically only accessed by the builders and restorers of the great building.

The visit starts with the façade flanked by two majestic towers ending in spire-like forms. Inside these towers, winding staircases take visitors up to the ‘heavens’ of the Cathedral.  Above the starry vault of the right aisle begins a guided itinerary reserved to small groups that includes a view inside the dome, the high altar, stained glass, splendid panoramic views of the Basilica of San Domenico, the Medici Fortress, the entire dome of the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, and the surrounding countryside. The tour concludes behind the façade, at the balcony that looks out onto Piazza del Duomo and the view of the Spedale di Santa Maria della Scala.
