ArteFiera 2016 opens tomorrow in Bologna, one of the most important venues to see modern and contemporary art in the country. This year, the fair will be one of the largest yet, as it marks its 40th edition. In celebration of this milestone, it will present a special exhibition – curated by Giorgio Verzotti and Claudio Spadoni – devoted to Modern and Contemporary Italian art. You can see a sneak peak of the slideshow here.

Roughly 11,500 square meters of Bologna Fiere will host 221 exhibitors, including 190 galleries displaying 2,200 works of art by more than 1,200 artists, from January 29 to February 1, 2016. This will be an exciting opportunity to see work by many important artists, including: Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Paolo Scheggi, followed by the generation of Gianni Colombo, Gianni Piacentino, and Ettore Spalletti, and movements like Analytic Painting, Kinetic Painting, Arte Povera, and Transavanguardia.

International in scope, the fair also presents a host of other artists from around the globe, such as Hans Peter Feldmann, Alfredo Jaar, Peter Belyi, and Zhang Huan, among others. Certainly ambitious, the organizers hope that ArteFiera will rise in the ranks to be on par with established international fairs like Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, the Armory Show and Frieze, while at the same time continue to emphasize the importance of modern and contemporary Italian art on the global art market stage.
