Rediscovered Sebastiano del Piombo Painting Joins Art Institute of Chicago Collection

The Art Institute of Chicago announced earlier this week that 16th-century Venetian painter Sebastiano del Piombo’s Christ Carrying the Cross (1515-1517) has joined the museum’s collection. The painting was recently rediscovered by experts from the Colnaghi gallery in London.

To date, at least four very similar versions of this composition by Sebastiano have been documented. These include two versions of Christ Carrying the Cross (1516 and 1532-1535, respectively) at the Museo del Prado (Madrid), Carrying of the Cross (1537) in the State Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg), and Christ Carrying the Cross (1535-1540) at the Szépmûvészeti Museum (Budapest).
