Samantha Hughes-Johnson

Samantha Hughes-Johnson is a specialist in the visual culture, social history and confraternities of late medieval and early Renaissance Florence. Her wider interests include Early Modern art, architecture and material culture (north and south of the Alps), the Classics, theology and the Tudor court. She has published various articles on the lay confraternity of the Buonomini di San Martino, poverty, piety and charity in quattrocento Florence, the Pazzi Conspiracy and Pandolfo Rucellai. Samantha is currently working on a new research project entitled, “Picturing Poverty in early Renaissance Tuscany 1400-1490.” The study seeks to locate the necessitous of this region in coeval art and encourage the hidden voices of the Tuscan disadvantaged via a fresh intertextual analysis of visual and literary primary sources along with cultural artefacts.
